Germany address format and examples

A German domestic address places the street before the building number and uses a five-digit postal code followed by the town on the next line. Domestic mail omits the country; international mail adds GERMANY in uppercase on the final line.

Address field order

  1. SALUTATION + RECIPIENT NAME
  2. STREET NAME + BUILDING NUMBER
  3. FIVE-DIGIT POSTCODE + CITY

Street, building and city line

German format puts the street name before the building number, then postcode and city on one line. Deutsche Post recommends flush-left lines with consistent typography and no blank line between name, street and city. Forms must accept German diacritics.

Five-digit postcode and leading zeroes

German postcodes contain five digits and may begin with zero, especially in eastern regions, so store them as strings. Do not prefix a domestic postcode with DE-. For international mail, add the full destination country on the final line.

Districts, Postfach and international output

A municipal district may appear as an extra line before the street when needed. A Postfach address replaces the street and building line rather than supplementing it. International output normally presents the destination city and country in uppercase Latin characters.

Common formatting mistakes

  • Putting the building number before the street name
  • Prefixing the postcode with the obsolete DE- country code
  • Saving a leading-zero postcode as a number

Germany address generator FAQ

How many digits are in a German postcode?

German postcodes contain five digits and may begin with zero, so applications should store them as strings.

Are all German federal states covered?

Yes. The current selector covers all 16 federal states with representative city records.

Why does the building number follow the street?

That is the common German postal ordering and differs from countries such as the US. The generator follows the local format.

Are results validated by Deutsche Post?

No. The page references official formatting guidance, but streets and buildings are synthetic and are not deliverability results.
